In 1995, thousands of activists, advocates and government representatives met in Beijing, China, to discuss women’s rights and put forward a comprehensive set of actions that the world could take to achieve gender equality. The set of actions were written in the “Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action .”
For the first time, the world acknowledged that “women’s rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights.”
Issues like reproductive health, education, and gender-based violence were discussed and governments made commitments to protect women and girls and put in place programs and laws that will help achieve gender equality.
